This December marks the 10th anniversary of the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, a transformative law that has empowered individuals with disabilities to save and invest for their futures while maintaining essential public benefits. Since its passage in 2014, the ABLE Act has helped hundreds of thousands of families plan for a better life experience.
The ABLE Act originated from a heartfelt conversation among parents asking how they could save for their children with disabilities just as they did for their other children. Before the law, individuals with disabilities faced challenging financial barriers – as having more than $2,000 in savings could jeopardize access to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.
Today, ABLE accounts allow individuals to save up to $18,000 annually (rising to $19,000 in 2025) for qualified disability expenses like education, housing, and health care. These funds grow tax-free and do not count toward the $2,000 SSI asset limit. Over 12,000 Floridians have embraced this opportunity, collectively saving over $100 million through ABLE United, Florida’s qualified ABLE program.
We recently hosted a special webinar, ABLE Act Anniversary: A Lesson on Self-Advocacy, featuring Congressman Ander Crenshaw, who played a pivotal role in the legislation’s passage. During the event, we reflected on the history of the ABLE Act and discussed the critical role of self-advocacy within the disability community. If you missed it, the webinar recording is now available on our YouTube channel.
Whether you’re new to ABLE or looking to expand your knowledge, we invite you to explore our resources like the “Faces of ABLE” stories and our Savings Calculator.
Let’s celebrate 10 years of progress and look ahead to continued empowerment for the disability community.
